PM Recalls Negotiation on the Paris Peace Agreement

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Paris Peace Agreement on Saturday. It was a historical moment for the kingdon wherein a series of negotiations were conducted in order to achieve peace and unity in the country. It also marked the end of the war between Cambodia and Vietnam.

Recalling what happened 30 years ago, Prime Minister Hun Sen states, "Thirty years ago, on October 23, 1991, the four parties of Cambodia, including Samdech Techo Hun Sen, represented the Cambodian government, the FUNCINPEC movement, represented by Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk, and Samdech Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh, the National Front for the Liberation of the Khmer People which was represented by Son San and the Democratic Kampuchea Movement (Pol Pot) represented by Khieu Samphan, the Peace Agreement was signed in Paris, France".

The historical achievement in Cambodia was witnessed by 18 countries along with the United Nations. The Prime Minister has added that he participated different negotiations to make this achievement possible. He met with the late King Norodom Sihanouk on 2 December 1987 in France.

He states, "This negotiation was a joint statement signed by Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk and Samdech Techo Hun Sen, called (Sihanouk-Hun Sen Negotiation Meeting at FERE-EN-TARDENOIS, December 2-4, 1987). The second round of talks between Sihanouk and Hun Sen took place on January 20-21, 1988 in SAINT-GERMAIN-EN-LAYE, France and elsewhere."

However, Prime Minister Hun Sen says that the civil war in Cambodia continued despite the existence of the Paris Peace Agreement. He says the civil war persisted due to Pol Pot's Democratic Kampuchea movement. But with his win-win policy, the Prime Minister says civil war completely ended in 1998 and since then, the whole country of Cambodia is in a complete peace and prosperity. He has emphasised that these are being enjoyed by people in the kingdom until now.
